Program Highlights

Choose to become a certified school counselor! We provide both the theory framework and hands-on training for you to become a /certified counselor. We also offer a School Counseling Certificate for students that already have earned their master’s in counseling.
Our program is designed for you, the working professional. Enroll in our hybrid, limited-residency program that is primarily online. The program includes one night of evening classes per week on our campus in Provo, Utah.
Make an impact on people’s lives. Help individuals deal with issues that affect their mental health, wellbeing, and goals. Help individuals control their personal development, learn to make positive adjustments, build productive vocational skills, and master the dynamics that permeate the human experience.
Utah desperately needs counselors.
There is huge predicted growth for the increased need for more school counselors in Utah each year. Utah also requires that school counselors seeking licensure must be trained in Utah.
The Counseling Program has two educational model options.

First, our “Residential” model—in this option, courses are offered in a hybrid format. Didactic components are taught asynchronously online; integration and application components are taught on-campus face-to-face.

Second, our “Limited-Residency” model—in this option, didactic components are taught asynchronously online. The integration components are taught synchronously through an online meeting room. Additional integration and application components are covered in three, two-day campus-based residencies throughout the seven-semester program.

  • Any bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited college or university

  • A minimum 2.75 overall undergraduate GPA on a 4.0 scale

  • An undergraduate statistics or research methods course with grade of a C or higher

  • Acceptable test scores from one of the following standardized tests within the last 5 years: GRE, MAT, or PLT. (This criterion is waived for applicants who either have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher or hold a conferred master’s degree or higher)

  • Three letters of recommendations (at least 2 from professional references)

  • Successful completion of an interview with Counseling Program Admissions Committee

Program Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to help prepare you to be the best school counselor and offer the support your students need.
Clinical internships and practicum sites provide opportunities for you to apply knowledge in supervised settings, develop your professional identity, and cultivate relationships with other mental health professionals, educators, and counselors.
Prepare to become a counselor. Take courses in research and program evaluation, assessment, and testing. Learn counseling theories and skills, psychodiagnosis, and how to counsel groups compared to individuals. Examine crisis intervention, substance abuse, and addictions. Delve into human growth, development, diversity, and ethics.
Dive into what you need to know to be a school counselor. Learn theories and techniques for developmental counseling with childrenーcontent spans from college/career readiness to issues such as suicide prevention. Learn what counseling interventions and services can be made for student success within elementary, middle, and secondary schools.

During your practicum and internship, each student receives one hour of weekly supervision from a licensed/certified counselor. You also receive one and a half hours of weekly group supervision from a university professor.
Our program has a list of approved schools and agencies appropriate for experiential learning for counselors. All approved sites have a licensed/certified professional counselor with appropriate training in clinical supervision to supervise each intern. Each site provides an environment appropriate to training that is conducive to confidential counseling, recording, and record-keeping.
The Counseling Program admits new students at different points throughout the year. Admission selections are based on a comprehensive review using all required application materials and information submitted. Admission to the Counseling Program is competitive and reflects a holistic consideration of the full spectrum of the applicant’s qualifications, based on all evidence provided in the application, and viewed in the context of the applicant’s academic and personal circumstances.


Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (8060 165th Avenue NE Ste 100, Redmond, WA 98052-3981), an institutional accrediting body recognized by the Secretary of the US Department of Education.

The nationally recognized accrediting body for counseling programs is the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).  In that this program is new, it is NOT accredited by CACREP. However it is designed around the CACREP standards and will apply for accreditation as soon as the program is eligible. Please know this is a declaration of the University’s intentions, not a guarantee of accreditation.
