Wes McWhorter, Ph.D., MPT, PT, and Doctor of Physical Therapy Program Director

Wes McWhorter, PhD, PT, MPT, is the program director of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions (RMUoHP). Dr. McWhorter earned a PhD in philosophy with an emphasis in physical education and sports from Brigham Young University. Prior to coming to RMUoHP, Dr. McWhorter started and headed the physical therapy program at Louisiana State University, and then again at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Dr. McWhorter is an experienced and highly-regarded physical therapist and educator.

When Dr. McWhorter was contacted to assist in starting RMUoHP’s new physical therapy program, the enthusiasm of university administration and the prospect of starting a new program captured his interest. Since then, Dr. McWhorter has enjoyed his time at RMUoHP.

In addition to Dr. McWhorter, the Physical Therapy Department has some of the best faculty around. In Dr. McWhorter’s words, “I love my faculty and staff. They are dedicated, hard working, inspired individuals who have the students first and foremost in their thoughts. I enjoy the support from the faculty. I feel that I am respected by the students, administration, and faculty.”

The Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree program at RMUoHP is an eight-semester residential program designed to produce physical therapists who can work in a variety of clinical settings and provide innovative evidence-based intervention plans centered on current research. The RMUoHP Doctor of Physical Therapy program includes a mix of the traditional lecture and lab learning environments and blended online courses.

With the best technology, world-class faculty, and clinical advances, as well as a contemporary educational theory and an accelerated program, the doctorate in physical therapy program at RMUoHP is an excellent fit for highly-motivated students who wish to be active participants in their education.

“The program is unique in that we provide opportunities for faculty and students to serve. In addition, we give our students a great education and mentor them on how to be healthcare professionals.”

When evaluating prospective students, Dr. McWhorter and other faculty look for applicants with dedication and passion for the profession. The program has a strong desire to recruit students with a prominent work ethic and an ability to relate to people. The advice that they would give to someone who is looking in to obtaining their DPT from RMUoHP, or even another university, would be to participate in volunteer work within the physical therapy field before applying to make sure that it is their right pathway and profession.

Ultimately, Dr. McWhorter and the faculty of the DPT program hope that “students feel that they are apart of the RMU DPT family and that each student knows that we are always interested in their careers and look forward to hearing great things about them.” McWhorter adds, “This is a wonderful place to work. The people, students, faculty, make this place awesome!”
