Overview

What is a Preceptor?

Preceptors are practicing professionals—physician assistants, nurses, physical therapists, optometrists, speech-language pathologists, and others—who instruct, supervise, and mentor students in clinical settings. While professors teach in classrooms and labs, trusted tutors in the field pass along their expertise to up-and-coming healthcare providers by demonstrating how theory and practice combine to improve the lives of actual patients. The preceptors’ classrooms— clinics, hospitals, medical centers, and offices—are where the real-world action and handson learning happen.

Why is it Important?

Clinical education depends on dedicated professionals willing to share their expertise and invest in the future of their field. Serving as a preceptor/mentor is more than a professional duty. It’s a chance to leave a legacy.

When you open your clinic to a student, you become the bridge between what they learned in the classroom and the real patients they’ll one day treat on their own.

RMU programs have honed their curriculums to prepare students to get the most out of their clinical experiences. Simulation training with standardized patient actors and volunteer opportunities at RMU’s clinics also help students hit the ground running.

If you’ve ever thought about becoming a preceptor, we invite you to take that step. Your experience and mentorship can shape far more than one student. They reach every patient that student will care for, across an entire career.

Become a Preceptor

“Our students are much better prepared than people from other schools. We’re building a reputation where a lot of people are starting to realize that our students are valuable to them.”

- Dr. Amber Collins, Director of clinical
 education for RMU’s Physician
 Assistant/Associate (PA) program.
