Dr. Tyler Sommer is a dedicated husband and father of three who has spent the majority of his adult life living and working in Utah. He is an award-winning educator, a board-certified PA, and currently serves as the Program Director and PA Department Chair at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions, positions he has held since 2021. He is one of the founding full-time faculty members at Rocky Mountain’s PA program, joining the team in 2015. Before moving back to Utah to join RMU, he practiced full-time in neurosurgery with the Mayo Clinic system in Minnesota. Dr. Sommer has clinical experience in neurosurgery, spine surgery, family practice, lifestyle medicine, and emergency medicine. While he is on campus five days per week, he also maintains a part-time clinical practice. He holds a Master of Science in PA Studies (MSPAS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Health Science- Health Promotion and Wellness. His academic special interests include lifestyle medicine, health and wellness, and preventive practices. When he’s not at work, he is usually spending time with his family, fishing or kayaking, tending to his children and chickens, doing yard work, enjoying the sauna or cold plunge, or hiking the mountains somewhere in Utah or Idaho.
